History
The town’s name is derived from the Mohawk word “Gan-an-oose,” meaning gananoque.casino “at the mouth of the river.” This refers to the Ganaraska River, which flows into the St. Lawrence River at this point. The region has been inhabited for thousands of years by various Native American tribes, including the Huron and Iroquois nations. In 1784, British Loyalists settled in the area, attracted by its fertile land and access to trade routes via the river.
